Groton Road Race...

April 26, 2009 - There are a lot of opportunities avail
ble to help out and support your club.  Contact Devon to offer your services.

Boston Marathon

Each year, the BAA grants the SqRR 5 entries to the 'big race' which are distributed to deserving club members and allows them to enter without having run a qualifying marathon.

This year, those deserving members are Alix, Rick, Colleen, Tracy, and Jenny.  I'm sure they have been hard at work training during the long, cold winter months.

If you're not running the race, why not come anyway and cheer them and our other runners on, then join us at the club sponsored hotel room at the finish line for some post race revelry and recovery.

Welcome to the Q1 Newsletter
Greetings my fellow Fishies of the Squannacook River Runners.  It has been a few long months since we produced a newsletter - but we have plenty of good excuses!

In the fall Chris, who has been pulling the newsletter together, took on the responsibility of race director for the 2009 Groton Road Race.  This further impingement of his free time and limited mental faculties caused the publishing schedule to slide.

A call went out to our running tribe to backfill the editor position.   Tom Penny gamely stepped forward and has produced this current masterpiece.  Think of Tom every time you run a race or do something cool that you want to share.

The last six months have been a whirlwind of activity.  We have a renewed and expanded Road Race committee that will share the load and ensure the longevity of this great tradition that has given so much to our club, our communities and our families.

We have partaken in our normal hubbub of races and events, finishing strong and remembering to smile while doing so.  We have had a particularly active social calendar of brunch runs - where good food and running comradeship comingle to warm our souls.

April 26th will see the 17th Groton Road Race and we need all shoulders to the wheel to pull it off.

Here's to all of you! We wish you a wonderful spring of running and living with Joy as part of the SqRR!  It's a privilege to work, run and celebrate life with you.  We are truly blessed.

I'll see you out there!
Chris,
Welcome New Members!
In their own words...

Collin Knaub:
My wife and I moved to Ayer about a year ago so that I could work for the State Police as a DNA Analyst.  I have been running for about 8 years and usually stick to the short races (5K and 10K).  My goal this year is to break my PR at both distances and place in my age group at every race.  I am also planning on competing in several mountain bike races and completing an off-road triathlon.

Kristen, Alfred, Katie, and Alex von Campe:
Our children are the runners in the family.   Katie (14) and Alex (11) both enjoy cross country running: the muddier the better.    Katie came in second in her age group in the 5K at the Groton Road Race last year and will eventually work up to the 10K, but not this year.  Alex ran the 2K fun run and the 5K back to back last year.   They are both participating in the spring track program at Country Day School, where Katie's main event is the 800 meter and Alex will compete for the first time this year.  Katie is looking forward to running cross country when she starts high school this fall.

Alfred and I are known to jog an occasional lap or 2 around the track and then fall to the ground panting.   I hope to work up to 4 laps this spring.  You will mostly find us walking or biking the rail trail and running only if a bear is chasing us.
2009 Groton Road Race
Hello my friends

We are entering into the final weeks of preparation for the 18th annual Groton Road Race.

It's a new year with a new approach.  In order to support the ever diminishing herd of key directors we spread our responsibilities out into a much larger and more distributed race organization this year.

Bear with us as we learn our new roles this year and thanks for the club and community support to enable us to give this proud old race another year in the sun (yes it never rains on the Groton Road Race).

With Gordon's help we re-jiggered the race committee to leverage the best and the brightest...and so far it is working.

This year we will be having our traditional road races 10k, 5k, 2k and Tot's trot at the Groton Dunstable Middle School on April 26th 2009.  We look forward to your help to drive participation, volunteerism and sponsorship.  Registration will be held on the Saturday and everyone is queued up to pull of another quality event we can be proud of.

If you'd like to volunteer give Devon Skerrit dmskerritt@gmail.com a call and he'll hook you up.  If you have any other pressing questions or needs drop me, or any of the other race directors a note or call and we'll hop to it.

Now's the time to close our eyes and leap!  See you at Registration, on race day and at the Apris-party.

Chris,
Race Wrap-up
Once again our school of fish has been busy swimming competitively.  It doesn't matter that at this time of year water has a habit of freezing and turning into ice, snow and all sorts of other non-liquid forms.  Proof of this is the Mill Cities Relay, where we had 6 teams compete on a snow-covered course under grey skies.

Of course, that didn't compare to the conditions at the Hangover Classic, where Chris and Brian acted like true fish and took a leisurely swim in the ocean after a 10K.

In the more distant past when weather was more pleasant (that would be only a few degrees below freezing and without a strong wind), we had over 35 fish and their family and friends in the Ayer 5K.  Halaina also set the course record for females on that day.

And going even further back, both the Bay State Marathon and the Groton Town Forrest Trail Race were held on the same day.  We had many members work both the marathon water stop and run the Groton race on the same day.  If you've never worked a water stop before, it's a lot of fun and a great way to get your non-running family members out and supporting runners.

Members also participated in
 - Dignity Dash in Groton
 - Philadelphia Marathon (Pennsylvania)
 - Derry Prep 16 Miler (New Hampshire)
 - Sweetheart 4 Mile (Connecticut)
 - Stu's 30K
 - Wild Rover Series
Spring Hash Anyone?????
The Two Lunatics have been busy all winter planning the next SQRR Hash Run.  We have not set a date, but should have the info out to everyone shortly after the GRR.

What is a Hash Run you may ask?  Simply put, it is a chance for a bunch of friends to bust out their finest festive running garb such as red dresses, pimp hats, and American flag boxer shorts,  get together at a yet to be announced starting point for some running, drinking, singing, name calling, mud throwing, more drinking, orienteering, and a little more running.

Sound like fun?  Good, because it is.  You don't need to be a serious runner.  You don't even have to like whiskey or beer, although it does help to dull the pain of a broken ankle.

For those of you who participated in the Hash Run last November, we hope to see all of you again this Spring.  If you weren't able to attend, please check out the video and please consider joining us this year.

Stay tuned..........................

Sincerely,

Tom Penny
