Dear Squannie,

Welcome to the second issue of the SQRR Quarterly Newsletter. Thanks so much for all the positive feedback many of you sent upon reading the last issue.

As you can see from the amount of email traffic, it's a busy summer. It's wonderful to see everyone energized and coming up with new ideas for activities.

Again, if you have any suggestions on content or improvements to this newsletter, please let me know. Enjoy reading!

President's Message

It's been a great, activity filled summer so far. We've been an active bunch of fishies.

The Squannie crew, headed by Mark G. and Ted M. has stormed Westford. Mark has a perfect attendance record and Ted is in first place overall with a number of impressive gold, silver and bronze finishes. Mark organized a successful 'SQRR night'. Great Job!

One Sunday morning we treated the citizens of Groton to an eye-opening 'Hawaiian shirt run'. Nothing like a moving fashion faux pas to get the villagers riled up. My Buddy and Aiyana's two hunting dogs frolicked for a Doggie Run one morning. You haven't seen the pure joy of running until you see some dogs do it. (We are a species inclusive organization.)

Gordon produced a 'Stroller run' that drew strong attendance from a gang of tadpole pushing parents. Gordon suggests that we turn this into a regular feature called 'Heathen Day Care'.

The overwhelming turnout out at Dunstable Firecracker 5K was initiated by Mark, Ursula and 42 of their relatives. (I think the final count was around 25 Squannie affiliates, many in team uniform.) Bottom line; we owned that race. We even brought home some hardware for the clubhouse trophy case!

Say this three times fast: "Tyngsboro Try a tri". If you don't mind exploring Dracut, go to the Club Fluer du Lis, (French for "my whole body hurts"), join Dave Wilder and Chris Shaffer to sample that triathlon thing without having to sign up for one.

Let's not forget the hazing of yet another wave of young recruits via the summer track and field program. They have pulled it off again. What kid wouldn't want to be doing 800s on the track on a sweltering August afternoon? Go down some night and lend them a hand or just cheer the kids on.

Best of all we have welcomed at least four new members to our club recently. Welcome! Tell us all about yourselves and join us for a run!

Of course Linda complains that there is too much running and not nearly enough drinking. Look for her to organize a 'course certification' meeting at a local watering hole. If you have never certified a course with the Squannacook executive staff, prepare to be entertained (and bring your best dirty jokes).

I don't know about y'all, but I think it's great that we are doing some new things and some events that involve the families and kids. Take a moment to serve me up some more good ideas for the rest of the year. There's life in this old club, and I'd like to thank you all for having me as cruise director for the last couple of months. If you have any suggestions, complaints or dirty jokes, feel free to write them on the back of a $100 dollar bill and mail them to me.

Thanks for the support,

Youth Track & Field Program a Success!

The summer youth track and field program is having great success this year. After a down year in 2003, there are 115 kids of all ages enrolled in this year's program.

Program management and coaching is being provided by Andrew Horton, Kerri Strauss and Brett Hall in conjunction with the Groton Recreation Department. There are many young volunteers helping to make this year's program a success as well.

Participants are learning about all aspects of track and field events, including the pole vault, shot put and hurdles--all with an emphasis on fun.

SqRR will provide some funding as part of the 2004 Groton Road Race proceeds, but because of the number of participants, we'll have to provide less funding as we have in the past.

New Look & Feel to SQRR.org

Thanks to our friend Down Under the club's official website has a new look and feel. It had been a number of years since it was updated and Kev Molloy couldn't sleep one evening. Voila! We have a new website.

The content has been reorganized and new sections added such as the photo album and favorite runs. Please take a few minutes to look at the new site and if you have photos, articles, or whatever you'd like to have included, please email them to Kev Molloy.

New Members

SQRR has a few new fishies in the school! New members are:

  • Jackson Williams, male master, Townsend
  • Andrea Myer, female open, Pepperell
  • Jim Ray, male open, Groton

I asked each of the new members to provide some information about themselves.

From Andrea: I grew up in Lexington, MA and have lived in Massachusetts my whole life except for a short time in Pennsylvania right out of college. I have an 8 year old daughter, love to run, ski and have recently started biking more seriously, I love to cook and entertain - though don't seem to have too much time to do either these days- and love to meet new people.

Hopefully we'll hear from Jackson and Jim in the next issue.

Club Race Results

Many club members have been active running road races and triathlons this summer. Please send me your results whenever you race and we'll get them posted on the club web site.

Event Calendar

Here are a few races and other activities that are coming up in the next few months. It looks like we'll have one mixed team to send to the Lake Winnipesaukee Relays in September. I'll send a note out to team members with leg assignments in early August.

If you have something you'd like to add to the calendar, please let me know. We'll post it on the sqrr.org web site.

Your Favorite Runs

As a result of the last newsletter Bob Lotz suggested adding a section for everyone's favorite runs. Just the kind of input I'm looking for! A new section has been added to the club web site titled "Favorite Runs". There are three runs listed there now from Bob, Chris Russell, and Jim Podolske.

Several of the runs are illustrated with photos and Bob Lotz's includes topographic maps! Talk about being thorough--he must be an engineer. ;-)
