Hello Piscine, I’d like to thank everyone for their support of the club over the past year. It was my great privilege to work with you as President. (I’ll still be around and active, so don’t celebrate yet!) As the British say; “The King is dead; Long live the King!”, and so it is with us, welcoming Chris Shaffer to a leadership position for the coming year. Please give him your energy and support, because that really makes the difference. I’d also like to thank Linda Beneke, Sharon Blood and Steve Legge for their long service to the club and their unconditional support over the years. Let’s keep it rolling with renewed energy and interest, Yours truly, Chris Russell, Outgoing President
I would also like to extend my "job well done" to Chris Russell as president for the 04-05 year and I would like to thank everyone who elected me to the president position of the SqRRs. I would like to reiterate my goal as president for the SqRR club: To grow the membership interest and participation in the club. Along with the newly elected members of the SqRR’s board, we will try to structure the club to cater to as many people as possible whether your goal is to get you across the line at the Groton 5K or Boston Marathon with a personal best or simply to keep you company as you string one mile to the next. As with any large group it is difficult to satisfy everyone at every time, but I hope that we can satisfy most of the people most of the time. If you have any questions/comments about the running club please let me know. I look forward to working and running with everyone this year. Sincerely, Chris Shaffer
A business meeting for the club was held on Monday, August 15th, and officer elections were held. The officers going forward for the coming year are:

Hey Squanners! Been OUT on vacation? Just getting BACK in town? Feeling OUT of shape? Want to get BACK into running? OUTgrown your bermuda shorts? Got lower BACK pain? I've got the cure: The Squannacook River Runners' OutBack Run (TM) This is a new and experimental community running activity that I'm going to try out starting this September. I'm inviting all of you, and all your friends, and all your neighbors to help me give it a try. The idea is to have a regular, informal, community running event that is available to the community. For you established runners, this will be another chance during the week to get in a few more miles with your friends. Here's the deal: Runners gather at the Rail Trail at the end of Station Avenue in Groton. At 6:30PM sharp, we all run north. Everyone at their own pace. Everyone in their own style. Feel like walking? Sure. Got kids? Bring 'em! Feeling speedy? Knock yourself out! After 20 minutes EXACTLY, everyone turns around and runs BACK. Prizes to be awarded on a totally sporadic and random basis. Booby prizes to be awarded to hot- shot runners who get all uppity and competitive.
RECAP: What do I need from you? I just need you to participate. Weekly organization will be minimal - I'll do a little bit of phone-calling to make sure that a few Squanners will be there. The run itself will require very little formal organization. With luck, it will run itself after a while. So, pencil in the dates (every week, same Fish-time, same Fish-place, same Fish-channel) and plan on it! Tell your friends. Drag your spouse out of the Barcolounger! Pry your sulky teenager off of Instant Messenger! If you can't get them to join you, just say "I'm popping OUT to run an errand. I'll be right BACK!" Stay tuned for the next update, Gordon Row
Join a Sunday run to meet some of the newbies!
The Fred Brown Lake Winnipesauke Relay is a relay race that runs around Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s an 8 person relay put on by the North Medford Club for the last 17 years and totals approximately 65 miles. Fred Brown was a long time running supporter that help found that club in 1933. The race was originally run on Cape Cod, but due to problems with traffic control, it was moved to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. As a club we have participated in several of these. It’s on a Saturday morning and we usually go up the night before, sleep over and start the next morning at 8:00 AM. The course itself is beautiful but fairly difficult. Some of the legs are quite hilly and long. There are also some shorter legs to allow everyone to participate. The logistics are fun in that you have to ferry people between the legs, dropping off the runners and collecting the finishers. And, most importantly, cheering one another on. I’m going to be looking for more fun relays for us to run this year! Get ready to join up! Put Sunday, December 4th on your calendars--that's this year's date for the Mill Cities Relays. --Chris Russell
The heat and humidity didn't stop this group of 130 kids from enjoying themselves this summer. The ages ranged from 5 to 14 years of age. They all tried their best in every event, from running events (100 & 400 meters), hurdles, long jump, shot put, javelin and discus. We had a wonderful, energetic coaching staff, passing on their knowledge and experiences from high school and college track programs. The program concluded with a small awards ceremony and a grand cookout.
If you have something you'd like to add to the calendar, please let me know. We'll post it on the sqrr.org web site.
