Mill Cities Relay - December 3, 2006

Contributed by Mark Graf

How can you write a concise Race Report about the Mill Cities Relay? It's kinda big if you think about it...

27+ miles. Six towns. Five legs. Two states. 160 teams and 800 runners, their days intersecting at four Exchange Points, sometimes multiple times, in some cases not at all.

And today, it began in the shivering pre-dawn darkness, and didn't end until it was early-December shorts weather.

The humble Squannacook River Runners turned in a commendable performance. Just look at the results:

Runnin' Wicked Hoad, the young talent of Chris Funch, Chris Shaffer, Brendan McCarthy, Steve O'Brien (The Younger) and JR Roberts, blazed to a 6th-place overall finish, which put them 2nd in the very competitive Male Open category. Wow! They even edged out a Male Masters team from MVS starring three runners who have traditionally run for the SqRR in the past (Brian Reeves, Frank Row and Ted MacMahon). (Sorry guys!) ;-) These young lads alone accounted for almost half the points racked up by our Club.

We fielded six teams, and amassed a total of 29 points in the Club competition, which ranked us 8th out of 18 clubs.

Not bad, huh?

Every individual and every team certainly has a story to tell, so instead of me rambling on here about the tiny slice of the day that I experienced with our team (the aptly-named Frozen Cod Pieces), it'd be nice to hear from you. Got a story to share? Tell us about it.

I snapped a few photos, but I obviously was unable to get a shot of everyone. Click here to take a look, and if you have photos of your own, upload 'em and add them to the album. Who took the early-morning group photo in the school parking lot? I want to see it!
